The failed propaganda effort was initially conceived as a means of riling up uneducated, low-information yahoos like Bill the Dumbest Voter.
For the uninitiated, Bill the Dumbest Voter is precisely why the Founding Fathers feared democracy, the Federalist Papers No. 68:
Democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property…[whereas a Republic] refine and enlarge the public views, by passing them through the medium of a chosen body of citizens, whose wisdom may best discern the true interest of their country.
It’s why the Founding Fathers designed the erectoral college w/ a failsafe to overturn the will of the people, the Federalist Papers No. 68:
The immediate election should be made by men most capable of analyzing the qualities adapted to the station, and acting under circumstances favorable to deliberation…will be most likely to possess the information and discernment requisite to such complicated investigations…to afford as little opportunity as possible to tumult and disorder.
It’s why the Founding Fathers didn’t want commoners erecting their own senators:
Americans did not directly vote for senators for the first 125 years of the Federal Government. The Constitution, as it was adopted in 1788, stated that senators would be elected by state legislatures.
And it’s why the Founding Fathers didn’t want commoners pressuring legislators to enact dumb retarded shit.
