Last month, I attended a Trump rally in Muscatine, IA.
It came up during a session with my personal trainer. I tried to avoid the subject, but she kept pressing. From there, things escalated quickly…
PT: What were you doing in Iowa?
Me: Nothing much.
PT: Really, nothing?
Me: Just visiting.
PT: Nobody just visits Iowa!
Me: I went to Iowa to support a candidate.
PT: Not Donald Trump.
Me: Yes, Donald Trump.
PT: He’s a buffoon. He isn’t presidential. Only 30% of what he says is accurate.
Me: Says who? Biased fact-checkers?
PT: They’re non-partisan.
Me: We’re 19 trillion in debt. We’re facing financial ruin if we don’t turn things around. We need a businessman who understands budgets, jobs, and trade deals.
PT: Money isn’t the only issue facing us. You keep talking about financial collapse, but we could collapse from all the gun violence and inequality.
Things got pretty heated at this point…
PT: He’s not fit to be President.
Me: BUT BERNIE SANDERS IS??
Me: HOW MANY JOBS HAS THAT SOCIALIST EVER CREATED IN HIS LIFE???
PT: That’s not–
Me: NO, HOW MANY JOBS!? HE HASN’T CREATED ANY JOBS. HE DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO CREATE WEALTH, ONLY TAKE IT!!
The rest of the session was awkward, but civil.
There is no moral of the story. That’s just what happened.
